Add Transitions

What You'll Learn: You're getting close to the point at which you can actually run your slide show. Before you do, however, wouldn't it be nice to transition from slide to slide in a dramatic fashion? Here's how...

In the previous lesson, we showed you how you can display your presentation in full-screen mode. There are other ways of looking at it as well, including the slide tray or slide sorter mode.

Go to slide sorter view by clicking on the icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen. When you move your mouse over the small icon, a tool tip saying "slide sorter view" will appear.

See: In the slide sorter view all of the slides that have been created will be visible and arranged in rows across the page. Being able so see miniaturized versions of the slides, and the order in which they are to be presented, will gives you a global perspective on your presentation.

Also in the slide sorter view, you'll be able to move slides around by clicking and dragging them; thus, slide #1 can be dragged to the slide #3 place, and vice versa. The new order in the slide sorter view is the order in which the slides will be presented in full screen mode.

Figure 2. The slide tray opens, displaying all the available slides --
in this case, three slides.

Select the slide you want to alter. In a few moments, we'll change the way the slides transition from slide to slide.

When a slide is selected a dark blue outline will appear around the slide. In order to select multiple slides at once hold down the shift key as you click on the slides.

Figure 1. The third slide is selected.

Figure 2. All three slides are selected.

Click on Slide Show on the main menu, as displayed in Figure 1.

Alternatively, you can click the Slide Transition icon on the button bar, as shown in Figure 2.

A drop down menu appears, one option on which is "Slide Transition."

Figure 2. Using the slide transition icon to alter the slide transition.

Select slide transition from either the drop down menu or the slide transition icon.

The slide transition dialog box appears on the right-hand side of the work surface. This dialog allows you to alter the transition from slide to slide in three ways: a) applying the transition to selected slides; b) modifying the transition speed and sound; and c) selecting how the slide is to be advanced.

Select a transition from the drop down menu just under the phrase Apply to selected slides:. In the example below, a "dissolve: transition is selected; thus, each slide will dissolve into the next when this transition is used.

As the transition is selected the transition will be previewed automatically for each of the slides in the slide sorter view.

If the transition isn't shown, look to the bottom of the dialog and make sure that the phrase AutoPreview is checked:

Next, we'll modify how quickly the slides will transition from one to the next, then add a sound to the mix.

In the Modify Transition section of the Slide Transition dialog box, change the setting from the default of :"fast" to "slow."

Changing the speed of the transitions can have a profound effect on your presentation. The right transition moving at the right speed can add a touch of drama to the presentation.

Figure 1. The transition speed at which slides transit from one to another has been changed from Fast (on the left) to Slow (on the right).

Figure 2. Changing the slide transition from "no sound" (top), to the selection list with the camera sound (middle) and, finally, having selected the camera sound (bottom).

The next sep in determining how you want your slides to advance is to decide how one slide moves into the next. Shall it change only when you click the mouse? Should it change automatically after a certain number of seconds? Or should it be a combination of the mouse click and the timer?

Under the Advance Slide section of the Slide Transition dialog, click the check box next to the phrase Automatically after:. Leave the phrase "On mouse click" checked. In the small field under "Automatically after," set the timer to 5 seconds, as displayed in Figure 1.

If you want all the settings to be applied to each of the slides in your presentation, click the Apply to All Slides button at the bottom of the Slide Transition dialog:

Changing the settings in terms of how you want the slides to advance depends entirely o how you're going to use the presentation.

If you'll be lecturing, you'll want control over when the slide changes. Keep the On mouse click phrase checked, but don't set the timer. As you speak, press the spacebar, and the slide will transition to the next slide only then.

If you want the presentation to run automatically (as in an unsupervised presentation in a museum gallery), then set the timer.

If you're using narration that you've recorded, set the timer for each slide to match the length of the narrative clip in terms of seconds.

If you're presenting under severe constraints -- a presentation at a conference in which you have a 20-minute time limit to present 20 slides, for example -- set the timing of each slide as you deem appropriate, on a slide by slide basis, with the total timing of the presentation to equal 20 minutes.

Figure 1. The "advancing" aspect of the slides' transition was changed from "on mouse click only" to "advance the slide automatically after 5 seconds." Thus, if the mouse button isn't clicked within 5 seconds after the slide appears on the screen, it will advance automatically to the next slide after 5 seconds.

Now it's time to review the slide show in its entirety. In the slide show sorter, single-click on slide #1 to select it, then click on the Slide Show icon in the lower-left hand corner of the screen, as in Figure 2.

Alternatively, you can press the Slide Show button at the bottom of the Slide transition dialog, on the right-hand side of the screen, as displayed in Figure 2.

In the Slide transition dialog, you have the option of playing either a single slide in the slide sorter view by clicking on:

Alternatively, you can play the entire presentation in full-screen mode by pressing:
