Add Builds

What You'll Learn: One of the more interesting effects you can apply to a slide is a "build." In this lesson, you will be applying a build to a slide that will effect the way that your bulleted text appears on the screen. This build is actually one of many animation effects packaged with PowerPoint. In this example, we'll be selecting a conservative animation effect that will display the bullets on a slide one by one, from the top to bottom. Other, less conservative effects can be applied as well.

Go to Slide Sorter view by clicking on the icon in the lower left-hand corner.

The slide tray with all your slides should be visible.

Select the slide on the slide tray to which you want to apply an animation effect.

A dark blue outline appears around the slide that has been selected. In the example below, we've selected slide #2.

Click on Slide Show on the main menu, then click Animation schemes, as in the left side of Figure 1.

Alternatively, you can right-click on the slide of your choice, then choose Animation Schemes as in the right side of Figure 1.

The Slide Design dialog appears on the right-hand side of the screen. In this dialog you can select an animation effect for the entire slide, as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 1. Two ways of opening the Slide Design dialog. On the left, you can access it by clicking on the main menu, Slide Show | Animation Schemes. Or, as shown on the right, you can right-click a slide, then click Animation Schemes.

From the Apply to Selected Slides drop down menu, select any one of the build options.

Since we want the bullets to appear one at a time, from the top down, we've selected the Subtle Animation | Fade In One By One option from the list. The animation that has been selected will be applied to the slide that was selected.

This list is rather long; it is grouped by four types of animation effects: a) No Animation, b) Subtle Animation, c) Moderate Animation, and d) Exciting Animation.

You be the judge of how "exciting" you want your slide to be. Some of the more exciting effects can be somewhat outrageous....

To preview the slide animation effects, click the the Play button, as shown on the right, this will play the animation in the slide thumbnail.

Alternatively, click the Play Presentation icon in the lower left-hand corner of the screen; this will play the slide with animation effects in the full-screen mode.

The animation that has been selected will be applied to the slide that was selected. There are two ways to preview the animation effect. On the Slide Design dialog, click the Play button, as shown on the right. This will play the animation in the slide thumbnail. If you want to see the effects at full-screen mode, click the Play Presentation icon in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
