So I’m walking around campus today when I see a girl wearing the most atrocious outfit: bright yellow pants, with uggs, and a hot pink cell as an accessory.  My roommate and I laugh and joke about what we consider a poor outfit choice.  I know if I was walking around in something so “horrible” I would want someone to speak up and tell me.  I would want to know before I stepped out of my room, and avoid making such an embarrassing mistake.  In my eyes, I could never pull off this outfit.  I wouldn’t have the confidence to act like I think I look good.  I like to collaborate with my roommates.  Even if I think it’s a cute outfit, there are always ways to improve.  Just the other day, I told my roommate to wear red sneakers, but she felt insecure.  You can’t wear anything if you don’t feel confident in it.  Therefore, I want to open the lines of communication, and discover new fashionable possibilities.  So if you have any criticisms, let me hear it.  There’s no reason to embarress yourself when there’s plenty of people around to critique you.

I was witness to this catastrophe of an outfit. We weren’t quite sure what she was thinking and we tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. Like maybe she threw something on just to run to Slavin. However, said girl was then spotted again at ray wearing the same outfit. The combination of brown, black and yellow, made her look like a walking toilet that someone peed and crapped all over.

So let me get this straight. . .when it comes to fashion, you are a strong supporter of conformity and this belief extends to ridiculing those who don’t conform. Is this one possible interpretation of what you are saying?

  3. Glamour Girl Says:

That is one interpretation, but you can also see that there are many different styles, some that I consider stylish that I still wouldn’t wear myself. There’s prep, emo, chic, goth, hippie…there’s good ways and bad ways to express these styles. What I didn’t mention is that this girl was wearing spandex, not the most appropriate choice for daytime wear. Her style was all over the place, which called attention to herself in an unflattering way. Most people choose to look good and pulled together, I just don’t understand why would you want to leave your house looking dishelved.

Who makes these rules? Where do you learn them? What are the penalties for violating them.

What’s interesting is that we have talked in class about how you all came to be the same, think the same, do the same, and how that limits us from exploring our passions. What if it is someone’s passion to violate the fashion rules, thumb their noses at all of the clothes clones on this campus (let’s be honest, you all pretty much dress exactly the same).

If you had followed the rules, you might be heading for an internship with Fidelity. Is it ok for someone to make fun of you because, although you are a business major, you are going to have an internship with a restaurant? You seem to be very confident in your choice of internship and that is great, indeed. This woman is likely feeling the same about her dress. And that is great as well.

Does this make sense to you?

To me this was more of an observation, and yes I do agree that most people on this campus dress alike…that is obvious. I’m just pointing out I don’t agree with it. I think it’s fine for people to take issue with what I do, I want to hear the criticisms. I hear them a lot from my parents for choosing to have the internship I do. It just makes me want to do it more. So if this post makes girls on this campus gain their own style and not conform to my ideas of fashion then good, it will give me something to talk about.

It seems that the rules are made years in the making according to what is hard to obtain. Many girls at this school want to prove their wealth, by showing that they wear certain brands, such as uggs, north face, tiffanys, seven for all man kind, etc.

I admit, I myself, felt compelled to fit into this type during first few years at this school. Not until recently did I start shopping at different stores. I realized fasion doesn’t come from the label, but from the materials, and the way it fits your body. But most importantly it comes from the confidence you feel when you wear it.

If she felt confident wearing that outfit, good for her, because in my opinion she must of to leave the house like that. I do not have the same confidence to pull off the same fashion choices. For example, I recently suggested to my roommate to wear a pair of red sneakers, because I loved the look. She, on the other hand, felt foolish and did not have the confidence. She thought, because she was wearing green pants, that she looked too “christmasy.” So there’s the difference…it’s all in the confidence.

Good points, GG. Confidence is such a rare commodity, and not just for the young. i agree with you, it makes such a difference.

Thank you for using my comments to think through this issue.

It was a challenge, and I really liked it.
