IFS Open Forum: Beautiful Pictures of Ugly Subjects: Mediated Beauty in Photography

On Monday, March 8, the CTE and the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs will be hosting the Interdisciplinary Faculty Seminar Open Forum on the theme of “Beauty.”

From the event flyer:

“From the earliest stages of making photographic images, one exercises the idea of beauty through composing complex forms in the viewfinder. One then extends it by performing various photographic printmaking techniques to convey the meaning of the captured forms. Over this process, once the image is ‘beautified’, it becomes separated from reality, despite the unspoken bond between the two. In the seminar, we will discuss how we read and evaluate photographic images and the reality attached to it. There will be a slide presentation and a photography exercise.”

This event will be held from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. in Feinstein 400. All attendees will be provided with advance readings when they RSVP to x1340 or cte@providence.edu.

All in the Family

Parents now expect to be an integral part of their student’s college experience, and most students welcome their involvement. Building on themes discussed at a previous CTE session, facilitators will focus on the many complexities of the parent/student relationship and their implications for both the teaching and academic advising of students. This workshop will serve as a forum for participants to share their own experiences regarding this issue, as well as an opportunity to generate strategies which contribute to appropriate parental involvement and foster student growth and development within the academic environment. An update on resources available through the Providence College Parent Program will also be provided.

This event will be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2009 from 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. To view the event poster, click the link below.
