PowerPoint Training: Up and Running

You have reached the section of Providence College's ITDP site that will assist you in learning PowerPoint. Ever want to put together one of those flashy presentations? Impress your students? Display your thoughts on the Silver Screen? Here's your chance!

This tutorial has been designed for the 2002 version of PowerPoint; if you have an older version, it's time to upgrade! Call Information technology (aka Computer Services) and ask for an upgrade to Microsoft Office 2002.

Print: If you want to print the step-by-step sequence, click the Print icon in your browser's menu bar; alternatively, you can choose File | Print | Print from the same menu bar.

Run PowerPoint While Practicing: Instead of killing off another tree, we advise that you practice PowerPoint at the same time that you're using these sequences. First, open both this site and PowerPoint. Next, press the ALT-TAB keys (first press ALT, keep it pressed down, and then press TAB). Then, while keeping the ALT key pressed, continue to press TAB again and again until the program you want is selected; lift your fingers and the selected program will appear. Alternatively, if you have your Windows Task Bar (across the bottom of the screen) is set to be visible all the time, your active programs will appear on the Bar; click any program icon to maximize that program on your screen.

Do: In this section are statements of what you do when you are in front of your computer...

Number: To the left of this section is a number; this number stands for the numbered step-by-step sequence. More complex skills will require more steps; each step will be numbered consecutively.

See: In this section are statements of what you'll see when you do that outlined to the left...

Scan first for text that is italicized or boldened; reviewing just this text could give you the sequence that you need without having to read all the other text, thus saving you time.

Graphic: To the left is a graphic; this is a close approximation of what you'll find on your computer screen when you are running PowerPoint. There may or may not be a different graphic for each step.

You may want to scan the graphics before reading the text; their sequence may give you a good idea about what needs to be done, and can save you time by not having to read all the text.
