Instructional
Technology Experience
I primarily use the N drive
to post handouts and/or projects as well as solutions for my
students. I also use the H drive to post handouts and/or projects
that I have developed and wish to share with other faculty
including SCE faculty (both for my ACC103 and my ACC406 courses.).
I sometimes use PowerPoint disks received from the publisher
in class. My only experience with Angel other than attending
the beginner class has been to post handouts simultaneously
to both Angel and the N drive and for some student email.

Primary
Objective
I
am planning on using these project monies, if
obtained, to convert my ACC103 Financial Accounting
course to Angel. This course is an intensive one-semester
Accounting course designed for NON-business majors
(such as Business Studies minors or other Liberal
Arts students) as well as Marketing and Management
majors. (Many of the Business Studies students
(NONbusiness) take my sections of this course
since I am the Director of the Business Studies program.)
I
think that technologically improving my course would
lead to enhanced learning for these students. If I
converted to Angel, students could all use the message
board feature of Angel. This would be superior to emails
since my responses could be broadcast to all.
We
do a Financial Reporting project in this course which
can become quite complicated. Students frequently
become frustrated and/or ask the same questions. It
would be beneficial if the students could all read
my responses to individual questions.
Submission
of papers electronically and the grade book features
would be helpful to these students. Another feature
Dr. Robert Hackey has recommended is online office
hours to supplement my regular office hours. It would
be helpful the evening before a major test and perhaps
for 1-2 evenings before the project is due if I had
online office hours so that students would feel
comfortable asking questions when they most needed
the help.I have many materials collected from the past
20 years of teaching and would be quite excited
about incorporating these into my course using
Angel and PowerPoint.
In
addition to developing PowerPoint slides, it would
be exciting to pull information from many sites and
sources and incorporate this into the course using
PowerPoint and Angel. I would also like to develop
some short video clips from sources to depict "real world" applications for
classroom material.I have developed a Financial
Reporting project in collaboration with another
Accountancy department colleague, which we share
with many of our department colleagues. This
would be significantly enhanced by incorporating
this project into Angel. I am hoping as I develop
this project that I will be able to present a
paper or publish an article relating to using
technology in teaching Financial Accounting.
(I also teach ACC406 Taxes for Business Decisions.
There is no textbook available that does a good
survey job of incorporating both individual and
business taxation with an emphasis on tax planning
into a one-semester course.
I
have developed after much research a substantial course
package with many assignments, both individual and
group, to supplement the book that I am using. Converting
this course to Angel with extensive
use of PowerPoint would lead to an enhanced learning
experience for the students. This would be a future
goal for me to work on.
Project
Details
I share my syllabus,
handouts, projects and lab assignments
with all new Accountancy faculty
(including SCE) who teach this course.
I develop a complete file including
disks, which I update and improve
annually, and have always made copies
of all to share with faculty. I would
be more than happy to do the same
and copy all of my work to share
with colleagues to use as they see
fit. I have never been concerned
about ownership of work since my
goal has always been student learning
rather than pride of authorship!
Assessment
Plan
I
plan to complete this project totally converting
my ACC103 Financial Accounting course to Angel
with PowerPoint applications.
I
will know my students' learning has been enhanced
through student evaluations with very specific
questions regarding Angel.
Using
Angel will also provide a record since I will
have students first submissions and subsequent
submissions for projects and papers. Comparison
of these will now be easily possible.
Scanning
information from various sources into PowerPoint
to incorporate it into this course will make
the course much more interesting and relevant
to students. The students' response in the classroom
would be evident.
Incorporating
short video clips into the course from various
sources to illustrate topics will also make the
course more interesting. The quality of the students'
discussion would indicate if this was successful
