Tsunami
Asian Perspectives Seminar: South and Southeast Asia
Fall, 2005
The South and Southeast Asian countries devastated by the tragic tsunami of December 26, 2004 became the focus of a course given by the Asian Studies Program of Providence College in the Fall of 2005. The background history and culture, including arts, religion and traditions of Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India and the Maldives were studied. The science of tsunami was also addressed before students followed up on a more comprehensive study of the ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction of the affected areas. Outside lecturers from aid organizations brought new and up-to-date information, which was opened to the entire College community. A class website project with team Power-Points was one of the course’s outcomes.
This course was meant to both inform students about the cultural and scientific elements related to the tsunami region, and to let them know how they may help in the ongoing relief efforts. It was also hoped that the course has inspired some students to serve in relief efforts in the tsunami-hit region or in other parts of the world. This point of view is consistent with the outreach and public service so central to Providence College. In keeping with he College Mission, the course helped [prepare students] “to be responsible and productive citizens to serve in their own society and the greater world community.”
Students from a variety of disciplines were encouraged to take this course. Their different backgrounds and interests contributed to the strength and vitality of this interdisciplinary course. Please click on each title below to view the team Power-Point presentations.
