Texts, Angel articles and interactive graphics: All assigned reading is to be completed prior to class. A failure to read scheduled material in advance of class will adversely impact your case analyses and class participation, and will impair your groups. Additionally, preparation for the examinations in this course will be burdensome if assigned reading has not been completed according to the schedule. The course calendar outlines the reading assignments. The calendar has been organized to provide a reasonable amount of reading each week and procrastination in reading one week's assignment will make the next week's reading burdensome. The reading is assigned in a particular sequence. Much of the reading is assigned in advance of the related case assignments to provide advance time to use the material in case preparation. The Angel readings are organized by weekly folders and include news articles, authoritative sources, short video clips and interactive graphics. Some of the Angel reading is required, while other Angel material is provided to augment case preparation and to ease your research burdens. Wall Street Journal (WSJ): This daily news periodical will be used to develop your general understanding of business and your understanding of how politics, economics, and world events impact business. Auditing is not done in a vacuum or in isolation. If you do not understand what is going on in the world, you will be unable to identify strategic and industry risks. Unlike your previous accounting courses, the answers in an audit situation are not found in a book, but require complex integration of knowledge from a variety of sources. One added benefit of reading a substantive news source is that you will make a better impression in job interviews (trust me on this one, over the years I have talked to many employers.) You are required to read daily (five days per week, Monday through Friday) the front pages of the main WSJ sections. Examinations may contain questions from the Wall Street Journal. You may share a subscription with a classmate, but every student must have access to the paper to complete assignments as necessary, i.e., general business discussions in class, case analyses, and examinations. An individual subscription provides you with access to the Wall Street Journal Interactive at no additional charge. Save your subscription number from your bill to enroll for this service. The College's Library also has a database in which you can find any article, so if you need industry information that has not appeared currently in the WSJ, you can find it in the database. Extra class participation WSJ news briefs should be selected from what you consider to be the most important story that impacts auditing or the business world that week. Before presentation, the brief should be prepared in the following format and submitted after presentation: Wall Street Journal News BriefName: Todays Date: Title of WSJ article: WSJ Article Date: Main Argument (minimum of 2-3 sentences): Evidence to Support Argument (list 1 or 2 main points): Your Point of View: Significance of this news item, i.e. why is this story important? |
